A Short History of Sunglasses

It isn't clear when shades first appeared. Archeologists have announced that walrus' tusks with narrow slits were employed by the primordial Inuit folk. They could look thru the slit while obstructing the dangerous rays of the sun.

Early sun shades were worn in the 12th century. To reduce glare Roman Emperor Nero polished emerald stones and held them to his eyes. Viola! He was able to see gladiators fighting in his arena.

In about 1352 flat smoky-quartz crystals were used by judges in China. This was done to prevent the witnesses from seeing the judge's eyes. More than safeguarding them from the sun this might have been the 1st attempt at employing a poker face. These were in a way the first round sun shades for men.

Audrey Hepburn's picture in front of Tiffany's is not the first classic portrait of somebody in shades. There is a fresco in a little church in Treviso Italy from artist Tommaso da Modena. Painted in 1352 this is the oldest known pictorial representation of eyeglasses. Like Nero's glasses these would've been made from gems to dam the glare of the sun.

In about 1852 James Ayscough began playing with blue and green curative lenses. His work wasn't concerned with the sun but with correcting vision. Precisely by accident his work with varied colored lenses did move the use of sun shades forward.

Sensitivity to light is one of the symptoms that ravage the body when a person has syphilis. Yellow amber or brown coloured spectacles were typically prescribed for those patients in the 19th century. At that point tiny else may be done to relieve the disease.

By early 1900 the use of shades became widespread particularly by stars of silent movies. The arc lamps utilized for snapping films left the actors eyes perennially red. Almost all of the general public felt the stars were wearing them to avoid recognition.

Sam Foster was the 1st mass-producer of sunglasses. Woolworths acquired his sunglasses in bulk and sold them in New Jersey. Around 1929 they were especially popular on the boardwalk of Atlantic City.

In the 1930's high altitude glare was a serious challenge for pilots in the U.S. Air Corp. Bausch and Lomb was contracted to provide shades that would diminish this problem. Glasses with a dark green tint which were unequalled in obstructing the bright yellow bands of light were designed. The rest is history. Flier sunglasses are still among the most well liked designs.

Later on Edward H. Land invented the Polaroid filter. By 1936 he was using it in the making of polarized sunglasses.

Hollywood celebrities and fashion designers made a huge impact on the sunglasses market in the mid-century. Clothing designers and stars put their names on glasses and sun shades. Everybody had to have them.

Today sun shades are far more than a style statement. After receiving drops for an eye examination doctors often give their patients recyclable shades. They ease the eyes and increase visual perception.

Sun shades have come a good distance from the pieces of walrus' tusks and polished gems. In 2004 Oakley's introduced two sun shades that actually has a digital audio player built in.

Sunglasses For Men

When it comes to sun shades men's and women's styles are totally different. Whether you are shopping for your husband, brother, father, male cousin or friend you need to choose a pair of sun shades that is acceptable for men. While women's sun shades are often more crowd pleasing and bright men's shades are rather more conservative and easy. Men may go for function in contrast to style when wearing shades. While there are many different styles to choose from there are one or two fashions of men's shades that are most popular among men of all ages. If you're buying a present your best bet is to stick to the styles below.

Wrap Around: This is the most popular style amongst men. Though they are excellent for any time use they are most helpful for heavy outside activities such as hiking fishing and water sports. Whether or not the guy you are shopping for isn't the outdoorsy type many men favour wrap around sun shades because they stay in place better than other styles. Many companies make wrap around sun shades and you'll find them for a good price. If you want big brand wrap around sun shades Ray Ban is known for their wrap around selection.

Aviators: These glasses are for the fellow that's not afraid of a little fashion. Tom Cruise made these popular in his 1980s pictureTop Gun. They are made with a thin frame which is usually black metal but may also be found in other colours like grey silver and white. Aviators are a good pair for a day lounging on the beach or lunch with chums. Though they first started out as sun shades for women they quickly became favored amongst ladies as well. So while you're already there get a matching pair of aviators as well. Ray Ban also makes fliers for terribly cost-effective. Costs but you may find more high end brands like Armani and Chanel.

Rimless: Rimless sunglasses are a classic style that look good on virtually anyone. They are straightforward and modest yet they can also help to dress up your look and complete your wardrobe. Like fliers they are more delicate than wrap around shades and are best worn during low impact settings. They're perfect shades for the beach or a walk on a bright day. Men's rimless sun shades are usually black or brown with a straightforward edge. Women's rimless shades are frequently more detailed sometimes having designs in rhinestones on the lenses. You will find men's rimless shades anywhere from 10 at Payless to over 1000 with high end brands like Balenciaga or Burberry.

Whichever style shades you choose it's worthwhile to get a high quality pair which should last a long time. Poorly made sun shades break and scratch easily.

Do Youngsters Need Sunglasses?

Adults wear sunglasses to guard their eyes from damaging UV rays and to stay comfy when outside. But it's also dangerous for our small ones to continually strain their eyes in the sunshine. Their eyes are more sensitive than ours and they want good shades doubtless more than adults do. Sun reflects off of sand snow water and pavement so children are therefore at a greater risk of damage from repeated sun exposure to their eyes. Unceasing strain of the eyes and exposure to damaging UV rays can cause future vision Problems like cataracts.

Kids can start wearing sunglasses as young as one or two months. They may pull them off the initial few times you attempt to get them to wear it but after some patience and a little coaxing they will finally learn how to like their sunglasses. Kids particularly do not like having the sun glare in their face. Take a walk with your kid in the push chair while he's wearing his new shades to let him get accustomed to them. He'll eventually learn that they keep the bright light out of his eyes.

When purchasing sunglasses for your child don't make a call simply based mostly on cuteness. The function of the sunglasses is key. Make certain to look for sunglasses that block at least 98 of both UV-A and UV-B rays. But if you can find 100 blockage then that will be best. Try to find frames with barely big lenses so that the complete eye area can be covered. Wrap around shades may me best for a baby in order that they don't constantly fall off. Also a kid who is very active would receive advantages from wrap around shades which will stay ready.

Doctors endorse only impact resistant lenses for children eg Polycarbonate or Trivex lenses. These lenses offer a natural UVA and UVB protection.

So far as the colour of the lenses consultants urge folks to buy only brown and grey coloured lenses for their youngsters or any neutral colour. Different colored lenses like blue purple and pink may be fun for the kid to wear but in fact they offer little defence against UV rays. Have a pair of colourful sunglasses for your youngster to wear at home or in the late afternoon when the sun is not high.

Correct eye care is important for folk of every age but especially youngsters. Most damage from the sun happens before a child is 18 years of age so elders should take the obligatory precautions in getting their kid good quality sun shades. Youngsters need sun shades like adults do.
